My December Daily/30 Lists Album Part 2

Using Gesso in your Art Journal

Ah, Gesso. You start out confusing- <i>what are you? Paint primer? Can't I just use white paint?</i> Then you become an artists best friend and I barely make any art journal pages without first giving them a coat of gesso.</div>

When I first started art journaling, I saw things about gesso, but I didn't really know what it was, or why I would want to use it, which is why I'm telling you now why I do use it! In case you're wondering the same thing!<br/>

It's basically a "primer", but it can be used in other ways as well.<br/>
<b><br/></b>
<b>Why do you need it? </b>Without gesso, you may notice that sometimes your acrylic paints (or other medium) tend to soak into the page, however if you give the page a coat of gesso first, they won't do that.<br/>
<br/>
<b>What's tooth?  </b>If you've read anything about gesso, you may have seen the word "tooth". What's that? Basically it means it gives your page/background a bit of texture, something for your mediums to hold onto. Regular white acrylic paint won't give you this.<br/>
<br/>
It's traditionally made and used in White, however it also comes in black, as well as clear and even colored (which I haven't tried yet).<br/>

(I applied a very light coat of gesso over this page, to act as a primer but also to lighten the book text.)<br/>

The main use of gesso is a primer, but you can also apply it through stencils, stamp in it, use a spatula to apply it thick for texture, etc. One favorite trick of mine is to <b>apply it fairly thick, and then to stamp into it while it's still wet.</b><br/>
<br/>
Here's how.<br/>

Use a spatula or an old gift card to apply the gesso onto your page. You want it a bit thick for this to work.<br/>

Once you've covered your page, take a stamp and stamp it directly into your wet gesso.<br/>

You want to have a baby wipe on hand to wipe off your stamp immediately to keep and gesso from drying on it.<br/>

<b>How to make the Custom Mugs:</b><br/>

1. Start by measuring the space on your mug in between the handle. That's where the tissue paper will go. Cut out a strip of tissue paper that width + long enough to wrap around your mug.</div>

2. Use the Mono Twin Permanent Marker to draw your design out onto the tissue paper strips. You could also use some stamps if you don't want to doodle, but be sure to use a permanent ink.<br/>

4. Use a foam brush to apply the dishwasher safe decoupage medium onto the cup where your tissue paper will go.</div>

5. Wrap your tissue paper around your cup and brush over top with the decoupage as well.<br/>

You'll want to add 2-3 coats of the dishwasher safe decoupage to fully seal it, however you need to let it cure for atleast an hour in between coats.<br/>

1. Use the lid of your mason jar to trace a circle onto a piece of white cardstock. Cut it out, and feel free to customize it. I doodled a black circle around using the Mono Twin Permanent Marker.</div>

2. Use the Dual Brush Pens to hand letter a custom label for your loose leaf tea. Since I put orange spice tea in the jar, I naturally used the orange dual brush pen.</div>

As I said earlier, the pens blend nicely, so I also used the red pen to add some shadows to my letters.</div>

3. Use some strong adhesive (I highly recommend Tombow's Xtreme Adhesive Runner) to adhere your cardstock circle onto the lid.</div>

4. I also wanted to seal this, incase it ever got wet, so I added a coat of DecoArt's dishwasher safe decoupage.</div>

DIY Crackled Pepsi Crate

Hey guys, Today I wanted to share this Pepsi crate I restyled using some Hazel and Ruby products and One Step Crackle Paint from Deco Art.</div>

I bought this wooden pepsi crate last year, because I love the little cubbies- perfect for organizing. But, I don't drink cokes (I'm from Texas, Pepsi is considered coke as well), so I didn't really care that it said pepsi on the side.</div>

Next I cut out some of the gorgeous flowers from the Newsprint Floral Wrap it Up paper and adhered them to the sides. These are perfect for fussy cutting out and using on projects.</div>

Time for some crackle! Go over the outside of the crate with the One Step Crackle medium. I found that the thicker I applied it, the larger the crackles, and the thinner, the smaller the crackles.<br/>

Let them dry fully.<br/>
<br/>
Now you'll want to apply the Gel Stain over top so that you can see the crackles better. I squirted on a small blob, and then rubbed it into the crackles with a baby wipe.<br/>
